The Fight for Federal & State Indian Recognition

Posted on March 5, 2012 by

I decided to look at Indian recognition at the state and federal levels. There were two goals that I wanted to accomplish in my research. The first was to define what the general term of an Indian was. I thought this was important to look at as I went forward to look at formal recognition of a tribe. The second was to look at the states that had granted state level recognition, and also the processes by which Indians had to prove themselves as a distinct tribe.
The points that I plan to convey in my TED talk is how tribes used to be recognize before recognition was striped and many tribes had to re-apply. The second goal of my talk will be to explain the process by which tribes have to prove themselves as Indian to get the benefits of an Indian tribe.
